website which is used as a means of communicating with friends and members of
the site by sharing peoples personal information.

websites are often noticed by their logos which is famous around the world.
Larger companies such as Tesco, New Look and Marks and Spencer have been using
social networking sites to boost their company’s status.
These logos are known worldwide.

There
are benefits when using these social networking sites such as getting to meet
new people and talking to new people that may or may not be from the same area
as you. You may also get to know their interests, how they look like and what
you share in common. Although there are many benefits, there are many dangers.
Many people make false accounts with false information that mislead people into
thinking that they are somebody who they aren't Privacy is given on social
networking sites although it is to a certain extent. Accounts may be hacked and
information can be gained and misused.
Social
networking sites are mainly targeted at people who like to interact, for
example teenagers. A common issue with teenagers is that they are unable to
sleep for the amount of time that is recommended to live a healthy lifestyle
which causes underachievement in schools.
A
survey was taken by a secondary school to find out how many young teenagers
were “sleep deprived”: “The survey found that 37% of those questioned had been
left sleep-deprived as a result of social networking and 75% didn't like the
idea of phones being kept close by while they slept.” Knowing they would be distracted if their phones
were close by, they found it easier to keep it a fair distance away.
Before
social networking, many people would have to go out and meet people themselves.
Many people would go to new clubs and activities to meet people their own age.
Some people would not even have thought of the idea of meeting new people at
all until social networking sites were invented. Although these sites have come
a long way, they could still improve their website to stop cyber bullying.
In
August “The father of a teenage girl who killed herself after months of
bullying online has said changes to social networking site Ask.fm do not go far
enough”.
David
Smith (The father of the girl who was killed) “wants the controversial website
to ban all anonymous posts to stop online bullies hiding their true identities”
Many
complaints have been made about social networking sites not doing much to
prevent cyber bullying. In my opinion I think that more could be done to catch the
bullies who are making people commit suicide. Not being able to track down
certain people on these websites, scares the public into thinking they could be
talking to dangerous people which in fact causes them to be cautious of
everybody on the site.
There
is still the advantages of their being a variety of social networking sites so
there are many sites to choose from, some safer than others.
